2017 CSA

CSA reflects an innovative and resourceful strategy to connect local farmers with local consumers; develops a regional food supply and strong local economy; maintains a sense of community; encourages land stewardship; and honors the knowledge and experience of growers and producers working with small to medium farms. CSA is a unique model of local agriculture whose roots reach back 30 years to Japan where a group of women concerned about the increase in food imports and the corresponding decrease in the farming population initiated a direct growing and purchasing relationship between their group and local farms. This arrangement, called "teikei" in Japanese, translates to "putting the farmers' face on food." This concept traveled to Europe and was adapted to the U.S. and given the name "Community Supported Agriculture" at Indian Line Farm, Massachusetts, in 1985.

CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Supporters cover a farm's yearly operating budget by purchasing a share of the season's harvest. CSA members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season, and assume the costs, risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer or grower. Members help pay for seeds, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it. This mutually supportive relationship between local farmers, growers and community members helps create an economically stable farm operation in which members are assured the highest quality produce, often at below retail prices. In return, farmers and growers are guaranteed a reliable market for a diverse selection of crops.

CSA Q&A:

  1. How much does it cost? 2016 share cost is $550 for 20+ weeks, or $300 for a full share every other week (we call that a half-share). We begin delivering produce in early May and go through mid-October.
  2. How much (quantity) is a share? It depends. The first weeks of the share in May are a celebration of the beginning of summer, just a teaser of what is to come. Lettuces, spinach, radishes, scallions, and other "cold crops" fill the shares. Gradually we add-on one vegetable after another: peas, beans, zucchini, broccoli, until all of a sudden, it's August: the tomatoes are exploding, the peppers are gorgeous... you get the idea. Then, the roots: potatoes, carrots, squash, onions. And fresh herbs...oh, the herbs, peppered into your share all season. OK, to answer your question: you may walk-away with 1-4 bags of veggies, depending on the time-of-year.
  3. How long is the season? The season will run from early-mid May through mid-late October. Last year, we delivered 23 weeks, the year before, 20 weeks. Mother Nature rules, so if she has any particular plans for us, we go-with-the-flow.
  4. What will I get each week, can I choose my veggies? Sorry, no, you get whatever is fresh that week. We have a "swap system". You can leave whatever you don't like and help yourself to extras others have left.
  5. Where will I pick-up my vegetables? You'll either fetch your share at a location in West Lafayette on Wednesday from 3:00-6:00 or at the Lafayette Farmer's Market from 8:00-12:00.
  6. What happens if I go on vacation? Please send a friend or relative to fetch your veggies...share the love! If you do not pick-up your share, we donate it to Food Finder's.
  7. Where is the farm? The farm is about 4 miles east of the intersection of highways SR 38 & I 65.
  8. Can I visit the farm or help with farming? You bet! We re delighted to show you around or put you to work!...just let us know, and we'll arrange it.

    About certification: our vegetables and herbs are grown from certified organic seed or plants. We always have and always will grow naturally, without any chemicals or pesticides. No federal certification labeling program will change the way we farm.

    About washing: we wash most of our vegetables before distributing them to our customers or selling wholesale. We do what we call a "field wash". You still may find some residual soil or mulch on your veggies. Please thoroughly wash your vegetables when getting them home.
